David continued talking but Robert tuned him out, allowing him to continue extolling the virtues of the country he had 103

wanted to see for so long. Two words, two simple words spoken openly told Robert all he wanted to know: ‘with you’. David had been disconcerted when he thought Robert was suggesting sending him to Egypt, and had then been happy and relieved when he understood that Robert meant to take him there.

After a minute or so, Robert interrupted, laughing, “So I gather you like the idea?”

“Like the idea? I can never thank you enough.” Abruptly David frowned. “Oh, but wait. Why? I mean, you cannot have any interest in the ancient history of the pyramids and the people who built them. And certainly not in the language when as yet we cannot even decipher one word of it. So...why? And why now?”

“To be honest, David, the place has always fascinated me, too.”“Really?”

“Oh yes, my father first took me there when I was a lad, aged about ten I think. He showed me some of the wonderful and yet strange things to be found there, and the buildings, the pyramids and the temples, quite remarkable. But you asked why? Why am I going now? Just to take you?” Robert queried, and David nodded. “I usually go to Cairo two, maybe three times a year and, while it is true I have brought the trip forward by a month or so, I would have been going shortly anyway. I decided to make the trip now so if we get news of Marsden I...we will not be travelling at the wrong time. We will not be away for very long, I am afraid.”

“Oh, I see, of course. Well, I understand about Marsden, but why do you go to Cairo so often?”

“Because a large portion of my export goods come from Egypt, and while my agent in Cairo is good, I think I have an eye for what will sell back home in England.” David frowned, cocking his head to one side, “Robert, I know you said you were involved in importing and exporting trade goods and that you have offices in Alexandria and Algiers as well as another somewhere in Europe and that you ship goods to England, but I never really queried what it is you deal in. It was not very important to me; I had other...matters on my mind.”
